Martin Bernon was born in Dublin in 1966. He studied the history of fine art at Sothebys. In the early 1990s he spent almost two years travelling extensively throughout India, Austrailia and South Africa - a stint which influenced his work. His approach to art has been informed by his experience of native cultures, naive painting and the evolution of symbolism in art all clearly evident in the simplicity of expression demonstrated in his work.

His works are to be found in public and private collections in the USA, Italy, UK, Nigeria, Austrailia and Ireland. Works in public collections include those in AXA Insurance, The Boyle Civic Trust, The Blackrock Clinic, Wexford VEC and Enniskerry public library. His painting 'SS city Of Waterford Going Down In North Atlantic41' was accepted into the annual summer art exhibition at the RHA and won the De Vere Prize. His works from a sojourn in Cill Rialaig include the Valentia Island series. Two paintings, 'Old Dutch Barge' and 'Island Pumps' were accepted by the RHA for their annual exhibition in 2006. In 2007 the RHA accepted two paintings for their exhibition - 'Roll on Roll Off...Dublin' and 'RNR P22 Dublin' from his Pierhead series.

This preview at the RDS will provide an insight into the artist's work and pave the way for his forthcoming solo show in Autumn.
